KIDJO! – A Feature Documentary on the Life, Music & Mission of Angelique Kidjo
Singer-songwriter Angelique Kidjo, from Benin, West Africa, has been a powerful and inspiring voice on the World Music scene for more than 20 years. Despite her rise as a Grammy-winning international pop star, she has never left Africa far behind. A long-time human rights crusader with UNICEF and the Batonga Foundation she co-founded, Kidjo has used her celebrity and focused her passion and activism to support some 1,000 girls in five nations by helping them get a good secondary and higher education so they can become “a new generation of leaders to transform Africa — one girl at a time”.
Angelique Kidjo has given filmmaker Glenn Silber an exclusive to produce KIDJO! to a feature documentary about her life, her music and her mission. The film will trace her amazing story from humble beginnings in Benin to her rise on the international music scene, using her extraordinary talents as a singer-songwriter – and her tireless energy – to advocate for Africa, children and women’s rights. In 2015, Kidjo received the Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which is their highest honor given for an artist’s humanitarian work to make the world a better place.
Producer/Director: Glenn Silber is a twice Academy Award-Nominated filmmaker for his documentaries (The War at Home, El Salvador). He and a 4-person video crew recently traveled to Benin for ten days in January, where they shot more than 50 hours of quality HD video with Angelique, her friends and family members to tell her life story based on her 2014 memoir, Spirit Rising, leading up to her work on behalf of African girls today.
KIDJO! will examine Angelique’s life in Benin where she found her singing voice as a six year-old child in her mother’s theater company and as a very young singer fronting for her brother’s rock band — to her years struggling in exile in Paris as a music student, and her determined, if unlikely, rise to international pop stardom. Angelique’s back-story will serve as a counter-point to contemporary footage of her hard driving, dynamic, exhilarating performances with her band on stage in key venues worldwide.
KIDJO! has an extraordinary team of Executive Producers, including Academy Award winner Alex Gibney of Jigsaw Productions (Taxi to the Dark Side; Finding Fela, Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief), and Abigail Disney and Gini Reticker of Fork Films (Pray the Devil Back to Hell, Women, War & Peace).
